Photographing Berat

Berat is a historic city in central Albania, situated along the banks of the Osum River beneath the slopes of Tomorr Mountain. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture, with white hillside houses and their many windows giving the city its enduring nickname, the “City of a Thousand Windows.”

Neighbourhoods such as Mangalem and Gorica, together with Berat Castle overlooking the valley, reflect centuries of Byzantine and Ottoman influence. The combination of layered architecture, surrounding hills and the Osum River creates one of Albania’s most distinctive urban landscapes.
