Via della Conciliazione forms the principal approach to St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, connecting the banks of the Tiber with St Peter’s Square. The broad avenue is framed by rows of historic buildings that draw the eye towards the basilica and its distinctive dome. The route passes through one of the city’s busiest historic districts, linking several of Rome’s most visited landmarks.

Photographer's notes
This area is normally crowded throughout the day due to its proximity to St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican and Castel Sant'Angelo. Arriving before dawn meant the avenue was almost empty, making it possible to photograph the scene without waiting for gaps in the crowds.
