Castel Sant’Angelo and the Ponte Sant’Angelo are illuminated above the River Tiber in the heart of Rome.

Originally built as the mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, Castel Sant’Angelo has served as a fortress, papal residence and prison throughout its history. The bridge in the foreground, completed in the 14th century, is lined with statues of angels designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his workshop.

Notes

The photograph combines four and thirty second exposures, HDR merged to preserve detail across the scene. The long exposure rendered the River Tiber almost mirror-like, creating a dark, polished foreground beneath the illuminated bridge and castle.
