Sarajevo

Sarajevo occupies a narrow valley within the Dinaric Alps, with urban neighbourhoods extending along the Miljacka River and climbing the surrounding hillsides. Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences remain visible throughout the city, creating a varied architectural landscape in which mosques, churches, synagogues and civic buildings exist in close proximity.

Historic streets, bridges and public squares reflect Sarajevo’s layered history, while elevated viewpoints reveal the relationship between the city and its mountainous setting. Seasonal weather, changing light and the contrast between dense urban fabric and surrounding slopes contribute to the character of the landscape.
