Glenfinnan Viaduct

Glenfinnan,

Completed in 1901, the Glenfinnan Viaduct carries the West Highland Line across a broad Highland valley.

Its distinctive curved arches have made it one of Scotland’s most recognisable railway structures. This view shows a ScotRail passenger train crossing the viaduct against a backdrop of rugged hills and open moorland.

Photographer's notes

The famous Jacobite steam train was not running on the day of my visit to the viaduct, but a passing ScotRail service highlighted how this historic structure continues to serve the modern railway network.
