The Scottish Highlands are characterised by rugged mountains, deep glens, expansive moorland and a coastline shaped by sea lochs and inlets. The region’s landscape has been formed by geology, glaciation and centuries of natural change, creating some of the most extensive and varied scenery in the United Kingdom.

Large areas of open terrain contribute to a strong sense of scale and remoteness, while mountain weather, shifting cloud and changing light continually influence the appearance of the landscape. The contrast between high peaks, broad valleys and coastal environments is central to the character of the Highlands
