The Colosseum has stood at the heart of Rome for nearly two thousand years, remaining one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. This long-exposure photograph captures streams of traffic passing through the surrounding streets, contrasting the monument’s permanence with the movement and energy of modern Rome.

This was one of several experimental photographs I made during my early years in photography. Looking back at the image years later reminded me how often I photographed simply to explore an idea rather than knowing exactly how it would turn out.
